Merry Christmas!

Sorry that posting has been a little slow this month! December is a crazy month for us all!
Thanks to a wonderful group of mommies and kiddos for a wonderful Momtourage year in 2010! In December of 2009, our playdate list was going out to about 16 moms, and as we end 2010, that list has grown to 68!! We're thankful for the many families that we have had the chance to meet and look forward to many more great activities in 2011!
(We don't have the date finalized yet), but we're planning another mom's night out in the beginning of January and putting together our next set of activities. So be ready with your ideas!!
Have a great holiday season!

Saving on Car Repairs

ok, this isn't geared so much towards young mammas! However, it is geared towards stretching your hard-earned dollars and since most of us probably have to deal with a car repair or two at some point, I hope it will be helpful! This was compiled by my hubby, Andrew, who has saved us thousands of dollars using these tips! So share them with your hubbies!

Step 1: Buy a Car Repair Manual
My personal favorite is the Haynes manual. http://www.haynes.com/.
However there are others out there as well such as the Chilton Manual: http://www.chiltondiy.com/. Either way, pick one up, and start reading it. Even if you never move beyond this point, you will at least learn how you car works, will begin to understand a few things the mechanics are talking about, and will know the difference between ball bearings and a ball joints.

Step 2: Buy/find your own parts
Local Stores
Buying your own parts invovles finding a local auto parts store and becoming familiar with it. There are many different places, such as CarQuest, PepBoys, AutoZone, etc. The one I have happened to land on is Advance Auto Parts but they are all pretty much the same. Whatever you pick, just stick with one main place and learn what they carry and don't carry, how their website works, and how the store is laid out. This will save you time.
I personally like Advance Auto Parts because their prices are normally the best or so closely comparable to others that its not worth going to another place. Also, most of their tools are lifetime guaranteed. They also offer some cool services like replacing your wipers for free and free battery installation. Better yet, they will check your battery/alternator/starter for free as well as check why the code is being thrown when your "check engine" light is displayed. These are all minor things but will add up if you are going to a mechanic to have them done.
Take the Part to a Mechanic or Friend
Even if you don't actually put the parts on the car yourself, you could find a friend to put the part on or a shop that will put them on. Although there are mechanic's shops that won't put on parts your bring in, there are many that actually will (even when they have a sign up that says they won't).
Online Parts
There may be times that you need a special part that a local store does not carry. In those cases, go online and find it. There are tons of websites that offer great deals. But KEEP IN MIND, that you may not always be able to return the part for a refund should you not need it. In those cases, make sure you really need the part and that you have someone that will put it on for you before you spend the money.
Junk Yards
These are great places to find non-mechanical parts for your car, such as side mirrors, doors, control arms, spare tires, etc.

Step 3: Buy good tools
Start off geting a good mechanic's wrench and racket set. I am personally a Craftsman fan because they are lifetime guaranteed. But like I said above, even local auto stores often sell guaranteed tools. You'll also want to get a good floor jacks, wheel ramps, and a jack stands. You should NEVER work under your car when just using that tiny little jack that comes with your car and can fit in your back pocket. You're just asking to get hurt (and probably die) if you do. As you go along, continue to buy tools with the money you save on doing your own reparis.

Step 4: Do the repairs yourself
There is nothing that will save you more money than doing the repairs yourself. I have saved thousands of dollars doing my own repairs. The car manuals are very detailed and give you step by step instructions for most jobs. If it is too complicated, it will normally tell you. But you'll also have to learn your own limitations with what you have in terms of Time, Money, Tools, and general patience level.

Step 4 Alternatives: Find a local technical institute/Find a friend
There are many local technical institutes and community colleges that will do your repairs for free since students have to work on cars as part of their schooling. You'll just have to buy the part yourself and possibliy wait a few weeks for an opening. But this is a great cheap alternative.
You can also buddy up with a friend that works on cars. If you do, don't just ask them to do the work by themselves, ask if you can watch and learn. They'll probably do your work for free if they feel like they are teaching you something in the process.

Miscellaneous: Coupons, Oil Changes, and Tires
Make sure to look for coupons out there as well if you do happen to go to shops and not do your own repairs. You should never be paying more than $20 for an oil change. If you are, go somewhere else or find a coupon first.
When it comes to tires, shop around and make sure you are considering the warranties included in the costs. My personal favorite places to get tires are TreadQuarters (also known as Mr Tire and Monroe Muffler) and Wal Mart.

Thanks, Andrew, for sharing your tips!

Sonoma Grille Gift Card Give-A-Way!!!

I was contacted on behalf of The Sonoma Grille in downtown Pittsburgh about doing a give-a-way for you!! I am more than pleased to try awesome Pittsburgh Restaurants and share the love (providing they're good, of course!) The SG is located on Penn Ave, right beside the Convention Center.
The Sonoma Grille was kind enough to allow me & my hubby a little taste testing and I highly recommend it! The Sonoma Grille is billed as California Eclectic and specializes in local, sustainable, and organic foods.
I love that they work with a local co-op to get as many of their ingredients fresh & local as possible! They are a sophisticated, casual restaurant with an airy dining room displaying vivid colors and a warm atmosphere. They also believe A meal without wine is like a day without sunshine. :)
Bottom line: it was delish!!
We were treated to some wonderful Tapas including:
*Jerked Laughing Bird Shrimp, Papaya Salsa, Plantain Chips, Toasted Papaya Seed Dressing *Indonesian Chicken Satay with Thai Peanut Sauce
*Filet Mignon with roasted tomato, sweet & sour onion marmalde, Dijon Aioli, Jack Cheese, Micro Greens
These were followed up by 2 sandwich entrees:
*Grilled Amish Chicken Breast -Free range chicken, La Quercia Farms prosciutto, housemade mozzarella, roasted red pepper, cilantro pesto, Ciabatta
*A Grilled Vegetable Gyro - grilled fresh vegetables, romaine, roma tomato, local feta cheese, tzatziki, pita

Our selections were all off of the Bar Menu. If you're looking for some amazing food in a warm relaxing atmosphere, but would like to keep the price a little lower, most certainly ask for the Bar menu that is full of delicious options such as we were able to try. And the fries, don't forget to try the fries. :-)
And since I am expecting, I was not able to try their wide range of wines (over 100!) or many delightful drinks, but I am assured they are good!!

Giving Back with Candy!!

What do you and your kids do with all that Halloween candy that you collect on October 31st? Do you have a big bowl in the kitchen where all the candy is collected and then up for grabs? Well, if you want to do something different with all that Halloween candy this year, consider participating in the Halloween Candy Buy Back.
Here's how it works…
* Participating dentists buy back kids’ unopened Halloween candy for $1 per pound at a scheduled event (click here to find an event near you)
* Dentists send the candy to Operation Gratitude or other Military support groups
* Operation Gratitude sends the candy to U.S. Military deployed in harm’s way

Clothing & Toy Swap!

The first semi-annual Pittsburgh Toy Lending Library KidStuff Toy and Clothing Swap is happening on
October 20 from 5-9 pm.
This is a fun opportunity to clean out those closets and toy chests. Come early if you need to bring your kids (they can play in the play space while you shop) or come later without them for grownup socializing and leisurely browsing.
To participate, please collect toys and clothes that are still in good shape but ready to find a new home and put them in reusable or paper grocery bags. Label the bags with your name and bring them in to the Toy Library by October 19 during operating hours (until 2:30 pm). When you come in, you’ll need to pay the entrance fee and receive a receipt to participate. Bring your receipt on October 20 and we’ll give back your bags so that you can fill them up with clothes and toys you want to take home.

Date: October 20
Time: 5-9 pm
Place: Pittsburgh Toy Lending Library (5401 Centre Avenue, in the basement of the First United Methodist Church)
Entrance Fee: $5 for volunteer members, $7 for non-volunteer members, $10 for non-members

So bring in those clothes that don’t fit and toys that your kids never got excited about. You are sure to find something great at the swap and hang out with other thrifty parents. Don’t forget the chance to swap last year’s Halloween costumes! Any questions, or if you would like to help with this event, please email Olivia Wells at wells.olivia@yahoo.com.

Candy Stash!

So, I just got back from Rite Aid where I got the following bags of candy for FREE. Absolutely free!! I am now ready for Halloween (& maybe a little bribery for potty-training, wink*wink)

So, it does take 2 seconds of planning, but I think it's totally worth it!
You also must have a Wellness Card and be SURE they scan it before ringing up any item or the rewards won't come through. If you don't have a card, sign-up is quick, easy, & free.

Rite Aid has the following candies on sale 2 for $5.
* Skittles 14 oz
* Swedish Fish 14 oz
* Cow Tail Minis 10 oz
* Starburst 14oz
* Jolly Ranchers 14oz
* Caramel Cremes 12 oz
* Sour Patch Kids 14 oz
* Jolly Rancher Pops 10 oz
* Charms Blow Pops 10.4 oz or 11.4 oz
* Dum Dum Pops 11.4 oz
* Lifesaver Mints Wint o Green 13 oz

However, after you purchase, 3 extras will print on your receipt - a $1 reward and two $2 rewards. These are the same as cash!

So here's how it works: buy 2 bags. Pay $5, your $5 rewards will print. Use these to purchase the next 2 bags, then use those rewards to purchase the next 2 bags, etc....The rewards will only print for up to 12 bags. So you would have to ring up 6 orders, but hopefully, like me, you'll have a very nice cashier who is thrilled at the deal you are getting. :) So, you will pay $5 up front, but at the end, you end up with $5 in rewards left over and you can use those to purchase whatever, more candy if you have lots of trick-or-treaters!
I found the bags that I got, not by the Halloween candy, but further back where their regular candy section is. Be sure to look for those that have a sign that say 2/$5.
I believe this sale will only be through Saturday (Oct. 9th), so grab it before it's gone.

Hope you're able to score lots of free candy too!
Now I just have to make sure the pregnant momma in my house doesn't eat it all. (That's me!!)

Seventh Generation Giveaway!!!!!!

As we neared 100 facebook fans, I wanted to do something extra special!! So I figured a giveaway was a good way to go. :) Since I love the company Seventh Generation and they are very baby & kid-friendly in their products, I asked them if they would be willing to sponsor this giveaway for us. Being the AWESOME company they are, they immediately jumped on board!!
So, one lucky mom is going to walk away with an amazing prize package! Here's what it holds:
Natural Baby Starter Kit
One pack of Diapers (you request size)
Baby Wipes Tub
Baby Wipes Refill
Baby Laundry Detergent
Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner
Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner
Disinfecting Wipes - 35 ct.
  All Purpose Cleaner
Natural Paper Towels
Seventh Gen Reusable Bag
Their only request was that I also try each of these products (which they sent me!) and provide an honest review of them. Hey, NO problem!! So here is my honest opinion............ :)
Diapers - I REALLY like their diapers. I think they work great, hold leaks (maybe not perfect for my heavy wetter overnight though), and hold up well. I love that they are chlorine-free, hypoallergenic, fragrance and latex free for my little guy's sensitive skin. One of my favorite things about them (and this is probably weird!), but I love that they are neutral-oatmeal colored and don't have goofy characters. The biggest thing is you have to watch out for is their sizing. I think that they tend to run small, so even if your child wears size 4, they might easily fit size 5.
Baby Wipes - I have to admit, I'm kind of a Huggies snob when it comes to wipes. And once you've used Huggies wipes, I think nothing else is quite as thick! That being said, I think the wipes did a great job of cleaning and were very moist, which I liked a lot.
Laundry Detergent - I do use cloth diapers much of the time, and as I said before, my little guy has extremely sensitive skin. So I have to be very careful in what detergent I use for his diapers. I have found that 7th Generation is one of the few laundry detergents that I can use, so I love that. The only downside is, the last time I purchased it, it cost $10 and I personally think that's a little too high for detergent. :)
Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner - one of the first "green" switches I made when I had my baby, was to look for cleaning products that were safe & non-toxic for using around children. I definitely like their cleaners and because they always have $1.00 off coupons on their website, I can usually get them for a great price! Their website promises - Formulated to be safe for your family and the environment, this product does not create harsh fumes and is a non-toxic, biodegradable alternative to conventional petroleum-based cleaners.
Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner - I had not tried this bathroom cleaner before and I thought it worked very well. Again, a great option when your toddler likes to hug the toilet. :-/
Disinfecting Wipes - with kids around, we can go through these by the canful! Love having these around for quick cleans.
Seventh Gen Reusable Bag - can always use a nice reusuable bag to use while shopping or throwing extra toys in or whatever!
All Purpose Cleaner & Natural Paper Towels - these 2 items were on backorder for me, so unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to try them out yet!

To check out all the Seventh Generation products and to print coupons, check out their website! http://www.seventhgeneration.com/

So..........here's how to enter the giveaway!!
Please leave a comment on this post stating what product you have tried from Seventh Generation or would be interested in trying! (click on "mommies who chimed in").
If you don't have a google or blogger account, you can leave a comment by clicking anonymous, but be sure to leave your name!
Contest entries will be taken until Tuesday, October 5th and a winner will be chosen by random.org.

Good luck & thanks Seventh Generation!

New Spray Park

When we heard that the new Troy Hill Spray Park was up & running, we definitely had to go check it out!

Here's what I discovered:
It's FREE!!
My son loved it!
About 15 different water features.
It is cement, so I would recommend having water shoes.
Toys are welcome and a lots of kids were having fun with buckets!
There is a park next door.
Plenty of free parking.

I was a little concerned that my 16 month old would get run over by the bigger kids. Though there were kids running all over, Graham did just fine and had no issues. Yay! :)

All in all, it is an awesome free summer activity!

I am sure we will be visiting this park as a playdate sometime soon, but you can check out more info here!

Happy Mom's Day!

Mother’s Day 2010 in Pittsburgh

There are loads of great things to do in Pittsburgh for Mother’s Day 2010…and so many ways to enjoy the day without breaking the bank! Here are some of Living Pittsburgh’s affordable highlights for Mother’s Day in the ‘Burgh this weekend:

Like FREE days? So do we…and Moms get a few this weekend!

Free Day for Moms at Clayton (and Frick is free as always!)

Here are some other low cost ways to enjoy the day with mom in Pittsburgh:

Shop the Pittsburgh Flea in the Strip District and let the special lady pick out a unique (yet affordable) gift. Before or after your flea shopping spree, grab a cheap brunch at one of the neighborhood diners.

Head to Oakland and enjoy a couple free things to do this Sunday! It’s Kids Day at Schenley Plaza (2-5pm) and Carnegie Library’s Sunday Afternoon Music Series. Grab a discounted meal at India Garden or Joe Mama’s when you’re done.

Bring your mom to the Pittsburgh Playhouse during Mother’s Day Weekend (May 7-9) and she’ll receive a free ticket to Seussical or The Dark Side of Zylo’s Moon. One free ticket will be given to every mom who is with someone paying admission.

If you’d like to beat the crowds and celebrate the big day with mom on Saturday, check this one out. It’s pay-what-you-can day with Dance Alloy Theater…what a deal! Catch the afternoon performance of Alloy Unlocked…Part II. YOU name the price!

Since Mother’s Day is on a Sunday, you can use your Giant Eagle Advantage card to get $10 off tickets to this weeks home Pirate game against the St. Louis Cardinals. They’ll also be giving away a jersey strap bag to moms and kids under 14!

Do you happen to have a hip mom who loves off the beaten path adventures? Try Living Pittsburgh’s affordable Adventure Blueprint for a whole Sunday in Lawrenceville.

Now here’s a really great way to spend the day with your mom if she likes wine. Take her out to La Casa Narcisi in Gibsonia for free wine tasting and a picnic lunch on the beautiful grounds. Sip some wine, tell her how wonderful she is, listen to live music, and enjoy a hand picked affordable meal (just remember to pack some of her favorites!) This great day will only cost you the price of your packed lunch and a bottle of wine…and many are very affordable.

Whatever you do.............hope it's special and that you give an extra hug to the little (or big) ones that allow us the privilege to be called Mothers.

Mother's Day Give-A-Way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You saw me mention the company Earth Mama Angel Baby in my last post of favorite things!
Earth Mama Angel Baby products contain only the highest quality, certified-organic or organically grown herbs and oils in their gentle handmade soaps, salves, lotions, bath herbs, aromatherapy sprays, massage oils and herbal teas. Their products are 100% toxin-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and free from all artificial preservatives, fragrances and dyes.

Well, they were kind enough to send me a few of their products to check out! They sent Happy Mama Body Wash as well as Angel Baby Bottom Balm . I wasn't SO impressed with the Body Wash. It didn't lather well and the smell wasn't my favorite. But I was especially excited to try the Bottom Balm! If you use cloth diapers, you know that regular diaper cream does not mix so well. I really loved the Balm! It is more of a salve-type substance so it immediately soaked into his skin and I saw a noticeable difference very quickly! I highly recommend it! It also works great for chapped noses & cheeks when those all-too-often colds hit!

Another product that is getting raves on their site is the Natural Nipple Butter. [excuse the frankness :-] If anyone else has ever had severe pain when they began nursing and was told that Lasinoh cream was the miracle worker [and it didn't turn out that way], I highly suggest trying out this cream!

I also love the look of these pampering gifts! What mama wouldn't love one of these?!

So now to our Give-A-Way!
Earth Mama Angel Baby is offering one lucky mama a $25 e-gift certificate for you to choose the items of your choice!!
Just in time for Mother's Day, a special gift for YOU!!

TO ENTER:
[open to anyone who is a mama, mama-to-be, or a daddy who promises to choose something special for his wife or baby :-]

LEAVE A COMMENT: (click on "mommies who chimed in" to do so)
 [3 comments = 3 chances to win!!]
Contest will close for entries next Wednesday, May 5th at Noon. The lucky number will be chosen by random.org.

Good Luck!
