EXHIBITS
The Wizard of Oz Children’s Educational Exhibition
Through September 2, 2012
Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the first-ever educational exhibit based on the beloved movie classic. Come over the rainbow with Dorothy and Toto on an exploration of the colorful Land of Oz. Journey from the sepia-toned Gale Farm to the vibrant Emerald City and experience the adventures of Dorothy and her friends.
Wizard of Oz Screen Prints
Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, 1:00 – 4:00 pm
Use silk screens burned with your favorite Wizard of Oz characters to create your own unique prints worthy of framing! Look for new characters bi-weekly.
Oz Collage
Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, 1:00 – 4:00 pm
Take a black and white image over the rainbow and add bursts of color by layering vibrant cardstock under an acetate photo.While supplies last.

Make It Challenge!
Monday, July 2, 10:00 am – Noon
Stop by the MAKESHOP to create a wearable item using any material but fabric. Challenge yourself to think outside of the box as you construct an item using a variety of materials that were not originally intended for wear. Collaborate with our Teaching Artists as you are given a set of rules and limited supplies.
Recommended for ages five and up. First come, first serve. Space is limited.
Cook It!
Tuesdays & Fridays, 12:15 – 1:00 pm
Join us outside for interactive cooking demonstrations in front of the Museum. Learn with Big Red Room Café Chef, Angelo Galioto, about seasonal eating while sampling new foods made with ingredients from the Museum Garden.
Solar Concert Series
Wednesdays; 12:15 – 1:00 pm
Enjoy free live music outside in the sunshine at Buhl Community Park at Allegheny Square. Bring your lunch and enjoy family-friendly concerts on a solar-powered sound system Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. in July and August. See the full line-up atwww.solarconcertseries.org
  • July 11Joy Ike - Ike is a skillful singer and pianist, with music that blends soul, pop and jazz. She has been voted City Paper’s “Best Solo Artist” four years in a row, and previously performed at the Lilith Fair.
The 5th Annual Solar Concert Series is presented by PPG Foundation and is a project of the New Hazlett Theater, The Saturday Light Brigade and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.
Guest Maker: Dave Edwards
Friday & Saturday, July 13 & 14; 11:00 am – 3:00pm
Join artist and maker Dave Edwards of Art Energy Design to explore water's ability to carry and bend light. Experiment with illuminated laminar flow streams of water. Laminar water streams behave like large fiber optic cables permitting light to be carried and bent within the water flow. Water can simultaneously propel and illuminate a variety of kinetic experiments. To make it even better, the entire system is run by solar power!
Open Clay Workshops
Sundays & Mondays; 1:30 – 3:30 pm
Sink your hands into real clay to hand-build a piece or try out the pottery wheel. Whatever you make can be fired and glazed for a small fee, then picked up 2 weeks later.

Children ages 18 months through 3 years and their caregivers learn through hands-on activities, songs and stories based on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory.

Guitar Exhibit - Carnegie Science Center

CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER – June 16 – Sept. 30, 2012
"GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked The World" is an exciting and engaging experience that gives visitors the chance to interact with the guitar not only from the perspective of its history, evolution, and design, but through the music it has created and the technology that continues to enhance it.
The guitar is the single most enduring icon in American history. This fully immersive exhibition explores all facets of the world’s most popular instrument, from its history as an instrument of popular culture over the past 400 years to the science of creating sound with wood and steel. Visitors will experience the science, sound, history, and cultural impact of the guitar in an exhibition that contains more than 60 instruments—ranging from the rare and antique to the wildly popular and innovative—along with hands-on interactives, models, touchscreens, performance video, audio, and stunning photographs.

Aug. 5, 12, 19, and 26, 11 am - 4 pm Want to try your hand at the guitar? Empire Music will offer small-group sessions on the Sonic Acoustic Stage. Try out a guitar or just listen in on some informal instruction. At the end of the lesson time, each person may have the chance to play with the instructor and a drummer!

Acoustic performances for early learners (ages 6 and under) will be held on select Mondays from June 18 – Sept. 24. (Free with admission.)
