Visit the "Education Tree" at the Mall at Robinson!

Will you be stopping by the Mall at Robinson this holiday season? Then consider stopping by the Education Tree!
Helping local children in need for the holidays just got much easier. This holiday season, The Education Partnership and The Mall at Robinson are teaming up to provide children with the gift of school supplies. The mall is hosting an Education Tree, a display provided by The Education Partnership to encourage community donations, through Christmas. To participate, shoppers can visit the display in the Grand Court (next to Starbucks and JCPenney), or visit online at EducationTree.org.

A simple $15 donation will provide children with necessary school supplies – and all who donate at the tree in the mall will receive an acknowledgement card and a handmade ornament, making it a meaningful gift to cross off any shopper’s wishlist. Beyond providing supplies, the donations are helping local students achieve success in the classroom – and providing them with the confidence to do so.
“For many of the children that we help throughout the year, school supplies may be the only gifts they receive during the holidays,” said Justin Brown, Executive Director, The Education Partnership. “We’re seeing that our community is inspired by this need, and we’re hoping that our Education Tree, which is located at a central location in the Mall, will motivate holiday shoppers to give back to these deserving children.”

More than 30,000 students in southwest Pa attend schools that are eligible to receive services from  The Education Partnership. To reach these numbers, a $15 donation provides a local student with a holiday kit – which can include crayons, notebooks, toothbrushes, pens and other essentials including hygiene items. Beyond that, a $25 donation will support a local student for an entire school year.
“The presence of the Education Tree calls upon each of us to consider what life might be like for a child who faces a school day without the things they need to be successful,” said Shema Krinsky, Director of Marketing, The Mall at Robinson. “While we’re holiday shopping, we are all reminded that we have an opportunity to support local families who need our help.”
Please consider supporting this with your donation this holiday season!

Kids Christmas Crafting (Peppermint Wreath)

Here's another fun Christmas project to do with your kiddos. Warning: it does involve a glue gun! But even a craft-challenged mom like me managed to pull it off. :)
I tried the Dollar Tree first for supplies, but the only item I was able to score there was red hots.  I next hit up Walmart where I was able to get everything else. (I think a white wreathe would be preferable, but they only had green.)
Wreathe: $4
3 bags of Starlight Mints: 98 cents/bag
Clear Acrylic Sealer: $4
Red hots: $1/bag
*Note: we made this last year for the first time and I did not use the sealer AND I put it on my front door. Translation: the day it hit 50 degrees I had a goopy mess at my front door! So I recommend the sealer & keeping it indoors. :)
Step One: Have your kiddos start unwrapping! My 2 littles loves this job. And it's actually very helpful. Win-win! My 2YO also tries to see how many she can stuff in her pockets without me noticing. :) And those ARE suspicious looking bulges in 2 cheeks.
Step Two: Start at the inner circle and begin hot-gluing the mints around in a circle.
Step Three: Finish by adding red hots between spaces.
Add ribbon if you wish....and you're done!
This is one of my kiddos favorite Christmas projects to help with and hey, it doesn't look like a kids craft. :)

Kids Christmas Crafting: Wrappin' Gifts

While I am not a crafter at heart, my son lives for special projects! I knew that I needed to get intentional about creating some crafting moments with him or else they probably just wouldn't happen. My house is probably not going to suddenly be overflowing with handmade abundance, but he will (and does!) remember these special times where we created things together. Off we went to Michael's to pick up a few supplies (he about died from sheer joy in that store.)
First project I decided on (practical purposes too!) was painting wrapping paper.
I tried to find a big brown craft roll, but Michael's only had white. (Possibly Hobby Lobby might have?) So I went with a plain roll of brown wrapping paper. Picked up the "dot paints". These things are genius, take off the cap, dab to paint. Boom. Art. The other thing I didn't realize was that these paints dry instantly and so there was no waiting time for paint to dry.
While I thought we would be going to more abstract direction, my son doesn't quite think that way. Hence the ninjas, dog/sky/son, & picture of his grandma. :)
Don't you just love brown paper packages tied up with string? :)

Lovin' these small businesses!

If you follow Pgh Momtourage at all, you've probably noticed that I'm pretty excited about Small Business Saturday this holiday season! The over-consumerism of the big box stores has begun to over shadow the holidays and when they took over Thanksgiving, I was ready to avoid them all together. I've been enjoying browsing through my Small Business Saturday listing and already begun making fun, personal purchases. I love that they are supporting so many hard-working people (many who I have gotten to know through the Momtourage) and I think SBS is going to be a huge boost to these businesses this year!
So in this post I am highlighting a few of my friends who make the most beautiful products! They are not local to Pgh, but they are all talented, creative moms (except Perch, no kiddos yet. :) who work like crazy to take care of their families, but allow us the pleasure of having pieces of their amazing works in our homes.
