ELEPHANT AND PIGGIE’S WE ARE IN A PLAY!
United States
Ages 3-8 | 60 minutes
Venue: Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street
Elephant Gerald and Piggie sing and dance their way through plenty of pachydermal peril and swiney suspense in Elephant & Piggie’s We Are in a Play!  This vaudevillian romp of a musical is based on Mo Willems’s beloved, award-winning, best-selling children’s books.  Together, these best friends face fundamental questions like: What do you wear to a fancy pool costume party? Should you share your ice cream? And how can two friends play with one toy? Backed by the nutty backup singers The Squirrelles, the duo even gets the audience involved in the action. You’ll be doing the “Flippy Floppy Floory” dance all night long!  This performance is also part of the 2016-2017 Citizens Bank Children’s Theater Series.
*Sensory Friendly Performances, which will include interactivity, rhythm, repetition, reduced sound levels and gentle lighting are scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

PULSE by Teatro al Vacio

Little Shoes Gives Back With Naot

I'm guessing that you love these summer-like days we've been having in Pittsburgh as much as I do! And what is one of the best things about summer? Sandals, of course! As a mom to four, I am singing HALLELUJAH when we can walk out the door in the time it takes everyone to slip on sandals instead of the sock-finding, the shoe-tying, the general shoe chaos!!! :) But if you're also like me, as you get older, comfort of shoes gets more and more important. You realize after spending a day in flip flops that your feet don't love you for that choice! But I'm also not ready (yet) to totally throw fashion out the window, so my summer mission always becomes finding sandals that are comfortable, supportive for my feet, and not totally u-g-l-y!

I was very excited to be introduced to Naot Shoes for several reasons.
#1: comfort
Our uniquely engineered insoles are a blend of natural latex and cork that are designed to replicate the shape of the foot, just like the footprint we leave when walking the sand. Yes!
#2: Style choices
With hundreds of shoes from which to choose, I can definitely find a pair that fits my style.
#3: Giving back
This weekend they are hosting a #NaotGivesBack event at Little Shoes in Squirrel Hill. They shared, "This event allows us to combine two things that we love, fashion and helping those in need. Everyone invited to attend the event will be able to contribute to the Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry just by simply trying on shoes. Try on a pair of Naots, we will donate a pair to those in need. If you buy a pair, we will donate two pairs. It's fashion for a cause!"

I'd like to invite you to stop by Little Shoes during their 3-day event this weekend! Simply by trying on a pair of shoes you can give back to our community!

The mission of the Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry is to end food poverty in their community by addressing the immediate food needs of those who are struggling with hunger and giving Food Pantry clients the help and support they need to address the underlying cause of their food insecurity.

Naot Gives Back Event Details

Littles Shoes, 5850 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217
April 21 and 22 from 9:30 AM – 9:00 PM and April 23 from noon – 5:00 PM

I'm excited to try out their sandals, but even more thrilled that we can all support these donations simply by stopping at Little Shoes this weekend and trying on a pair of Naots! It really doesn't get any easier than that, does it? The more the merrier, so grab a friend to tag along as well. This section of Forbes Ave. is lined with great places to eat, ice cream shops and a Carnegie Library location, so it's a great place to meet up!
You can share your favorite pair on social media with #NaotGivesBack.
What number is YOUR favorite?

Thanks to Naot Footwear for sponsoring this post. I was given products in exchange for my review. All opinions remain my own as I don't endorse products that I don't love!

Free Store + Donation Drive

I was recently able to stop by The Free Store 15104 in Braddock and see the amazing way this is helping so many! The Free Store was created by Gisele Fetterman, wife of Braddock Mayor John Fetterman. Together they are working in an amazing way to bring life & vitality to a part of our city that had lost 90% of its population, homes & businesses. They've been involved in bringing organic gardens to Braddock and have many creative projects and visions for moving their community forward. They are a couple that gets things done in the best way - with love, kindness, & generosity!
The Free Store operates out of a colorful shipping container on a donated piece of land. The shipping container is located at 420 Braddock Ave, Braddock PA 15104.  The shop is currently open from 1-2:30 on Tuesdays/Thursdays and by appointment.  They are also open many Saturday mornings, but the hours may vary based on volunteers available. They operate fully by a wonderful group of faithful volunteers who help with the day-to-day process. Go here to find out how to be a volunteer!
Donations are happily accepted! They are most readily stocked with clothing, shoes, toys, books & some household items. But they are also take bigger donations if there is a need - just call before you would drop a large item off.  They have several businesses that have donated surplus, including Costco & Osh Kosh B'Gosh. Even recently, they accepted hundreds of boxes of new clothes from Gymboree & Crazy 8! Anyone is welcome to "shop" there, they just ask that you take only what you need + pay it forward! The environment of the store is warm, friendly, & happy!
They also have a neighbor shipping container that is the Red Lantern Bike Shop. This venue is operated by Brian Sink and it receives donated broken and unused bikes. The bikes are then refurbished and redistributed back into the community. Please donate bikes to this awesome organization when you have ones that your family no longer needs! I was even able to get bike helmets for my 2 foster children which allows them to love & enjoy family bike rides!
Red Lantern is typically open on Saturday mornings, but based on volunteer availability, you may sometimes find them open throughout the week.

My friend, Nadine, from The Pittsburgh Mommy Blog, has organized the first EVER "Free Store 15104" Donation Drive!
 June 21st from 2-5pm
The Summer Music and Marketplace Series will be going on featuring great music (3-7pm), the I Made It! Market! (2-7pm), and the Farm to Table Pittsburgh Farmer's Market.
They will gladly accept your gently used clothing (baby, maternity, and adult), accessories, linens, baby gear, toys, kitchen accessories and other small items. Go here to RSVP and see any other details.
I have no doubt that the community of Pittsburgh is going to continue to support this endeavor of people giving back into the community. Be a part of that effort and donate to FREE STORE 15104!

About Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater
Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, opens the door for children to experience professional performing arts programming, which inspires, challenges, educates, and stimulates respect for and an understanding of all cultures in an entertaining and enlightening way. The Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival (celebrating its 28th year in 2014) is one of only four international children’s festivals in the nation.  The Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater Family Series (2014 ̶ 2015), now in its 45th season, introduces children to the arts early in life, sparking their interest and appreciation so they continue to enjoy and support the arts as they grow up. For more information, visit TrustArts.org/PGHKids.
About the Pittsburgh Cultural TrustThe Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has overseen one of Pittsburgh’s most historic transformations: turning a seedy red-light district into a magnet destination for arts lovers, residents, visitors, and business owners. Founded in 1984, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a non-profit arts organization whose mission is the cultural and economic revitalization of a 14-block arts and entertainment/residential neighborhood called the Cultural District. The District is one of the country’s largest land masses “curated” by a single nonprofit arts organization. A major catalytic force in the city, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a unique model of how public-private partnerships can reinvent a city with authenticity, innovation and creativity. Using the arts as an economic catalyst, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has holistically created a world-renowned Cultural District that is revitalizing the city, improving the regional economy and enhancing Pittsburgh’s quality of life. Thanks to the support of foundations, corporations, government agencies and thousands of private citizens, the Cultural Trust stands as a national model of urban redevelopment through the arts.
